Fall Break in Vail

October 31, 2023

Earlier this month, we visited one of our favorite mountain destinations; Vail, Colorado. We’ve visited Vail in the summer and we’ve skied Vail a few times over the years, but this was our first time to visit in the fall. It’s off season and even though the town is quiet, it may now be our favorite time to go!

Stay

We’ve always stayed at Four Seasons Vail and this trip we did the same. The boys love it – they set up the room with a tent, cookies to decorate and child size robes and slippers. We stayed in this room this time and it was plenty of space for our family of five. We swam every day, walked to Vail Village and loved our cozy nights in the room with the fireplace.

Eat

  • Yeti’s: Such a great, casual breakfast spot. Delicious coffee, pastries, smoothies, breakfast tacos, etc.
  • Up the Creek: As the name says, this restaurant sits right on the creek. We sat outside and the boys ran around playing in the grass/creek area.
  • Joe’s Famous Deli: This is a Vail staple. We grabbed sandwhiches one day and had a picnic by the river.
  • Pazzo’s Pizza: We always order pizza one night and this is our favorite spot.
  • Back of Haus Burger: This is something we did years ago, but is on it’s way back! At Four Seasons Vail, you can book a table in the kitchen aka “Back of Haus” and eat burgers while enjoying the entertainment of a very busy kitchen! It’s such a fun experience and you end dinner making your own milkshakes with the pastry chef. We did this on our most recent trip and highly recommend!
  • Mountain Standard: Always worth a visit! We’ve gone for both lunch and dinner and have never been disappointed!
  • Remedy: This is a restaurant at the Four Seasons. It’s more casual dining then Flame and has the most beautiful views. We ate here on our last night – it was cold and rainy and we loved sitting by the huge fireplace!

Do

  • Pirateship Park: My kids favorite park ever. We usually go in the winter when its been snowing and this time we spent a few hours with them running around playing in the most beautiful fall weather!
  • Piney Lake: We spent one afternoon here – the boys loved playing/adventuring here and we saw a moose!
  • Rent bikes: We rented bikes one day and rode all over Vail, Lionshead and along the river. It was one of our favorite days!
  • Betty Ford Alpine Park: We rode our bikes here and spent a lot of time at the playground (it’s huge!) and at the visitor center where they had a lot of fun activities for the kids indoors.
  • Glenwood Springs Adventure Park: This is an amusment park at the top of the mountain. It’s about an hour from Vail, but the kids thought it was worth it! You take a gondola up the mountain and at the top is an alpine slide, roller coasters, swings, caverns, etc. We spent most of the day here!
  • Pool: The pool at Four Seasons Vail is heated, so we swam and used the hot tub most days!

What to Pack

The weather changes quickly! I brought mostly activewear with layers for the day and jeans/sweaters/boots for night!

Cheers,

Stia, Jean and Katherine

Rome

couple on vespas rome

The last stop on our trip was Rome. We flew in/out of Rome, so we decided to spend one full day in Rome before heading back to Dallas. Caleb and I had both been to Italy before, but never together. Rome was one of the cities that we both had been to and we had toured most of the sites. So if you’ve been to Rome before, this is what we did in our one full day in the city:

Stay

Six Senses Rome just opened earlier this year and it’s in such a great location! We walked everywhere from our hotel. The rooms are large and spacious and the whole hotel has a very spa-like feel. We loved our stay here. Rome is such a busy city and Six Senses is a very tranquil place in the middle of a bustling city.

Do

  • Rooftop drinks at Notos: This was the rooftop bar at our hotel. We got in from Positano around 6 pm and after changing went straight to Notos for a drink! It was so beautiful and offered the most amazing views of Rome!
  • Vespa Tour: Since we had seen all the major sites previously, we decided to book a vintage Vespa Tour of Rome through our travel planner. It started at our hotel and we spent three hours zipping all over Rome. It was incredibly fun to see Rome like that, plus we learned a lot!
  • Walk around and shop: After the Vespa tour and lunch, we just walked all around the city!
  • Roman Baths at the Six Senses Spa: It was hot while we were in Rome and after a full day of exploring, we went back to the hotel and straight to the spa. The spa is beautiful! And the Roman baths were so relaxing and a great way to unwind after a busy, hot day.

Eat

  • Poldo e Gianni: We originally had other dinner plans, but that restaurant was closed when we got there, so we had to pivot! Caleb found this cute spot tucked away from our original restaurant and it was perfect for our first night in Rome. The food, wine and staff were all wonderful!
  • Bivium: We had breakfast here and it was amazing! The hotel is a wellness hotel and we had the best frittata here.
  • Roscioli: This was our lunch spot on our only full day – and it was one of our favorite meals the whole trip. It’s a tiny market/restaurant and the food was delicious! We both said we could have sat there the rest of the day trying new foods!
  • Giolitti: For our gelato fix!
  • Cielo: Our last meal in Rome was at Cielo, which is located inside Hotel de la Ville. We loved getting one more night on a rooftop in Rome, reminiscing on our trip and witnessing an amazing sunset!

Positano

The second stop on our trip was Positano. We originally were going to stay in Ravello for four nights, but since we had never been to the Amalfi Coast we decided to move to Positano for a night. I’m so glad we did!

Our travel advisor booked a car for us from our hotel in Ravello to Le Sirenuse. We decided to leave right after breakfast so we could fully utilize our short time in Positano. The trip was just over an hour from Ravello to Positano.

Stay

Le Sirenuse is such an iconic hotel and ultimately we decided that’s where we wanted to stay – right in the heart of Positano. It’s built into the cliffs and has the most beautiful views! It has everything you need on property – pool, spa and amazing dining. Not to mention the service was outstanding.

Do

  • Walk around Positano: We did this as soon as we arrived and although it was busy, it’s such a charming place.
  • Boat ride: We spent the rest of our first day on a boat. The hotel does boat trips and it was perfect. We left from the Positano dock just before lunch and enjoyed the breezy day. We stopped to cool off in the water and swim, had some champagne and then the boat dropped us off at Conca del Sogno for lunch. After lunch, the boat picked us up to head back to Positano. We stopped at the “emerald grotto” on the way home and it was beautiful!
  • Pool: On our second morning, we had breakfast, walked around Positano and then relaxed by the pool before our car picked us up to go to Rome.

Eat

  • Breakfast at La Sponda: The hotel has a beautiful breakfast with incredible views. Plus, the breakfast spread is incredible.
  • Conca del Sogno: This is located in Nerano and during our boat trip we stopped here for lunch. We loved it. It’s only accessible by boat and it’s such a fun and beautiful atmosphere! The whole setting was out of a movie. After lunch, you can swim at the private beach. Highly recommend!
  • Aldo’s: This is the champagne and seafood restaurant at Le Sirenuse. Like I said, the views from Le Sirenuse are incredible and Aldo’s views were just the same. We ate seafood, drank spritz’s and enjoyed being on a beautiful terrace as the sun set on a beautiful city. We were torn about dining at La Sponda vs a more casual place after being out on the boat all day, but we were so happy with our decision!
  • There are SO many restaurants that were recommended to us, but we just didn’t have time to try. Next time!

What to Wear

Cheers,

Stia, Jean and Katherine
