tips for traveling with a toddler

September 18, 2017

baby boy with backpack in airplane seat

polo|shorts|shoes|backpack (dallas friends- we bought and had william’s monogrammed at hip hip hooray in dallas)

Happy Monday! This post is long overdue, but better late then never! Traveling with a toddler is waaay different than traveling with a baby. Babies are somewhat easy to travel with – they sleep the majority of the time and if they are awake and they cry it’s likely they are hungry or need a clean diaper. That’s not to say it doesn’t take some time adjusting to all the baby stuff that is needed and figuring out the logistics ie: whether to check the stroller at the check-in or at the the gate, bring or rent a car seat, etc. If you’re interested in more traveling advice, read our tips for traveling with a baby and traveling with an older baby!

Now… traveling with a toddler is a different story. William absolutely loves to fly, so there is not a chance in the world that he sleeps on airplanes anymore. In fact, it was when we went to LA in February when I realized I should give up on trying to get him to nap on a plane. He is way too interested in everything going on around him, flirting with the flight attendants and other passengers or wanting to walk up and down the aisle. He understood early on that when the seatbelt sign was on we had to stay in our seats, but the minute the light went off, he was ready to roll! Each time we traveled last year, we started to get better about keeping him busy on the plane. Here are a few tips we learned along the way!

Tips for Traveling with a Toddler:

  • Check your car seat: If you need a car seat at your destination, check this when checking bags. It’s free and takes a load off of your hands! We like to check William’s car seat in a wheeled travel bag to protect it, keep it clean and make it easy to transport until we get our car.
  • Bring an umbrella stroller: We won’t be able to do this now with two babies, but it was so nice to have a lightweight, umbrella stroller for traveling with William when he was older. It folds to nothing and doesn’t take up space in the car
  • Travel in the morning: If your toddler is like William and won’t nap on a plane, traveling before nap time (and before fussy time) is optimal.
  • Pack a meal: We like to pack a favorite sandwich and fruit to feed William once we’re air born. It gives him something to do while the plane is reaching altitude and before we can move around.
  • Pack snacks: We also pack a variety of snack foods such as Cheerios, cheddar bunnies, Annie’s snack mix and mini peanut butter crackers. These make a good diversion when we’ve hit the bottom of our bag of tricks 😉
  • Bring your toddler’s backpack: For William having all his things in his very own backpack makes it all the more fun to travel. And we don’t have to worry about digging through our bags to find his snacks and toys when we need to put our hands on something quickly!
  • Sit in the bulkhead: It may cost a little extra (although some airlines will assign the bulkhead to a family traveling with a little one) but it is well worth it! The extra space allows your toddler to sit on the floor and play and gives space for moving around while you’re in your seat. We lay one of William’s play blankets down on the floor and he can have his snacks there and read or play. This is a lifesaver on long flights!
  • Bring a couple of books and small toys: William isn’t really big on toys, so we only pack a few that we know will keep him engaged. He loves the All Aboard book series. Finding the conductor and pointing out landmarks in each book will keep William occupied for short periods of time. Small alphabet stacking blocks are also a good diversion. He loves to stack them into a tower, but also loves to look at all the pictures and letters that he recognizes.
  • Pack a favorite lovey and security blanket: William has far too many loveys to take them all when we travel. They would overfill his entire backpack! Before we leave we ask him to pick one or two of his “guys” to come along on the trip with us (Ellie the elephant always comes along!) and we always bring his small “baba” blanket.

We would love to hear some of your tips, too! And, please wish us luck as we are taking our first trip with William and Henry after Henry gets his 8-week shots. That will be a big adjustment! 🙂

top ten things to do at four seasons scottsdale

Over Mother’s Day weekend, we headed to one of our favorite destinations, Four Seasons Resort in Scottsdale. It was our third time visiting the property and each time we love it even more (if that’s even possible!). It is one of the most peaceful places we’ve been. Each casita feels so private, but it’s a quick walk or golf cart ride to the pool/restaurants/spa. There are so many great golf courses nearby to keep our husbands happy too. It’s one of our favorite places to relax (we never want to leave!), so we wanted to share our top ten things to do at Four Seasons Scottsdale!

Top Ten Things to do at Four Seasons Scottsdale

  1. Spa Day: The three of us girls relaxed with spa treatments over the weekend. Jean and Katherine had the best facials with the most amazing head, neck, and arm massage and Stia enjoyed a maternity massage, which they allow you to lay flat on your stomach into a body pillow. So amazing! We were on cloud nine afterwards.
  2. Golf at Troon North: This is always a must for our husbands. They only played once over the long weekend, but they always enjoy the course. The hotel provides shuttles to the course and will have your bags dropped off and picked up. We’ve met them out on the course a few times and we always enjoy seeing the wildlife and the beautiful desert backdrop!

  3. Breakfast at Proof: The mornings at FS Scottsdale are so peaceful. We always tend to wake up early when vacationing on the west coast, so each morning we headed to Proof bright and early. Proof is an “American Canteen” that sources local comfort food. It’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (all of which are so good!), but our favorite time of day is breakfast. It’s so nice sitting on the patio, having a leisurely breakfast and enjoying the cool desert air. Our husbands always get the buffet, which is incredible. The girls love the egg white frittata or the acai bowl. We can sit on that patio and drink the yummy coffee for hours! There are also great selections of cocktails for brunch- the Bloody Mary is amazing!

  4. Rent a poolside cabana: On Sunday, we spent the day in a luxury poolside cabana. The luxury cabana was the perfect way to relax on Mother’s Day. We arrived following our spa treatments and had such a great time just relaxing and playing with William. The cabana is completely equipped with a stocked mini fridge, snacks and a big screen TV. A selection of sunscreen and other sun products is also included and a butler is there to make sure you don’t lift a finger! He brought a fruit tray late in the morning and cocktails and appetizers in the afternoon. The weather was already getting pretty warm when we were there, so it was nice to have a completely shaded place for William to eat and relax while he wasn’t in the pool. What a perfect way to spend Mother’s Day- or any day for that matter!

  5. Dinner at Talavera: Our meals at Talavera are always a favorite memory. The staff at Talavera always take great care of us. We pretty much let our waiter take the lead on ordering appetizers, meals and desserts and we were so glad because he had some amazing recommendations. For appetizers, the favorites were the beef carpaccio, the foie gras banh mi and the octopus. For dinner, our husbands loved the steak and we girls decided on seafood – shrimp and salmon! Our waiter also paired wines for each of us (except Stia, of course) to complement our meals. He did a great job! For dessert, the chocolate soufflé is a must and also the cloud cheesecake. You definitely need to treat yourself to dinner here.

  6. Hike Pinnacle Peak: Only a mile from the resort, Pinnacle Peak is a 3.5 mile roundtrip hike with spectacular views.
  7. Catch a Yoga class in the courtyard: There are various fitness classes offered on different days of the week. Try something new!
  8. Cocktails on your patio: Each casita has a private patio with views of the resort or the mountains. The outdoor furniture is so comfortable and we have made it a tradition to enjoy a cocktail (or two) on the patio before heading to dinner!
  9. Get the AZ Mai Tai: We tried this iconic pineapple drink on our first trip to Scottsdale and had to get it again. This time it was a virgin Mai Tai and William loved drinking the fruit juice and eating the fruit off the top, while relaxing in a kid’s lounge – he sure has the life! 😉

  10. Relax: This is so easy to do at Four Seasons Scottsdale. If you don’t even feel like expending the energy to walk to dinner, one of the resort’s golf carts will pick you up and deliver you to Talavera or Proof. They are also perfectly happy to come and take your kids for golf cart rides, if they are obsessed with them like William!

    |William loved all the options on the kid’s menu- and kids under four eat free!|

A few notes on traveling to FS Scottsdale with kids:

  • Kids under four eat for free. This is an amazing thing for us parents of toddlers. Sometimes William will eat whatever we put in front of him, sometimes he won’t take a bite. It’s so nice to know we can order “risk free” 🙂
  • Kids camp: For kids 5 years and older, there is a a Kids Camp with so many fun complimentary activities that kids love.
  • We used the Four Seasons Concierge to help find a babysitter for Saturday night. We were so happy with their recommendation. William was immediately comfortable with her and we enjoyed a relaxing evening at Talavera. We met some other parents who have the sitter come for nap time so they can enjoy the pool kid-free for a few hours. We’ll definitely do that next time!
  • FS Scottsdale made our stay with William so enjoyable. They thought of everything. From greeting him with a cute little stuffed animal to baby-proofing our room for us, we didn’t have to worry about a thing. When we requested a crib, they also brought a bib, Honest baby products and kid friendly snacks. So easy for us!

france

Part two of our trip we spent in France and we road tripped there from London.  Yes, we drove the car onto a train and then traveled through the Chunnel!  Sunday was a leisurely drive for us: we stopped in little towns for pain au chocolat, a picnic & exploring and that evening we ended up in the charming town of Bayeux.  Having never been to Normandy before, we spent our time exploring the American Cemetry, Pointe du Hoc, explored Bayeux and ate and drank all day!

If we are anywhere near Paris, you know we have to spend a little bit of time there!  On Tuesday after leaving Bayeux, we hopped on a quick train to Paris for a couple of days and one night.  We stayed at a charming hotel, Hotel Saint Vincent, in Saint Germain des Pres.  What a beautiful hotel, with a huge bathroom & windows overlooking a perfect courtyard!  Not to mention a great location for us to walk anywhere in Paris.  Since we spent a week in Paris last year, this trip was really about the wandering, eating, drinking & of course shopping!
