three months with william

April 18, 2016

three months with WilliamIt’s hard to believe that our William is three months old already. In some ways, that three months seems like it has flown by (didn’t we just take his newborn photos?), but in other ways it seems like forever. Our pastor couldn’t have said it any better- the days are long and the years are short. The past three months have been the best months of my life. As a person who wasn’t a “baby” person, my world has been rocked (in a very good way). If you haven’t been around kids or are scared to hold babies, it’s okay. I definitely felt this way before William and things ended up just fine 🙂 I can’t get enough of him and it’s true… that maternal instinct comes on its own.

There have been a lot life changes and learning over the past few months and I thought I would update you on William and how things are going for us.

  • Weight: 13 pounds 2 oz Length: 24 inches- William is long and lean. He is currently wearing at least 6 months in most clothes and is growing out of them quickly! His everyday favorites are Kissy Kissy, but Gigi insists on him having a little Burberry in his wardrobe too! These little swim trunks are next on the list.
  • Sleep: William has been a good sleeper from the beginning. He was never confused between night/day and has always gone to bed easily (thank God!). Will slept in a moses basket in our room until our trip to London. Once we got back, we moved him into his crib in the nursery. The first couple of nights were rough, but we haven’t looked back! He typically sleeps from 9 pm-6 am, but we have started to see a little sleep regression the past few nights, which we hear tends to happen around three months.
  • Nursing: When I first started nursing, it was very painful. I was expecting it to be uncomfortable at first, but at his 3-day old appointment, our doctor noticed he was tongue-tied. We saw an ENT a few days later for a procedure to correct it. I nursed him right after the procedure and what a difference it made! I have been exclusively breastfeeding (with an occasional bottle) since William was born. I know it doesn’t work for everyone, but it has been great for us.
  • The Happiest Baby on the Block: It was at William’s 4-week appointment that the doctor diagnosed him as colic. (Sorry, if you brought us dinner and our baby was crying for no reason #firsttimeparents). She told us to look into this book (that some of you guys also recommended to us) that describes the 5 S’s as ways to soothe: swaddle, lay on their side, shush, swing and suck. At first we didn’t think William liked being swaddled, but really we just needed one that he couldn’t get out of! This one is our favorite. It really settles him down and allows him to relax and sleep. We just ordered this one to use for his next stage when we transition out of the swaddle.
  • Personality: It’s been so much fun getting to see his personality develop. He is full of smiles and also talking like crazy. He loves the ladies- anytime there is a pretty face around, he smiles and bats his baby blues. Will also seems to be quite the deep thinker, he studies everything around him very intently! He is very easy going and we take him with us just about everywhere. He also has no problem letting us know when he is not happy i.e.: a wet diaper, fighting sleep and also during tummy time (his absolute least favorite activity).
  • Schedule: We are on the no schedule, schedule. Because Will nurses on-demand, every day is a little different.  Our typical schedule is nurse, play, sleep and repeat. So far this has worked for us, but I know as babies get older a schedule is really important.
  • Travel: Don’t be afraid to travel with a baby! Travel is a huge part of our lives, so we took William to meet his great-grandparents in London at 8-weeks old. We shared our tips for traveling with a baby and we are excited that we have a few more upcoming trips planned.
  • Our must-have baby gear includes: Will’s pacifier, Giraffe or “Raffe”, is his best friend and goes with us everywhere, this swaddle was a lifesaver, we love our car seat/stroller set and travel bag, this diaper changing station fits perfectly inside my favorite tote bag, the cutest moccasins in every color (and they stay on even the tiniest little feet), lightweight muslin swaddles for blankets, car seat covers and nursing privacy and this bathtub makes bath time a breeze.

My best piece of advice is to take time and slow down. The newborn period is hard and wonderful at the same time. So many snuggles and so many cries. And diapers. We cleared our schedules to really take the time to figure out our new life and we are so glad we did. After being at home with Will for these first three months, Caleb and I have decided that I will not be going back to work and instead I will stay at home with Will. We have put a lot of thought and prayer into this decision and feel it’s the best one for our little family. I truly loved my job and after being there for over 5 years, it’s hard to leave, but I am so grateful that my job now is raising Will (and writing the blog with Katherine and Jean of course!). Will, you are the best thing that has ever happened to us and we are so thankful God blessed us with you! It’s a joy being your momma.

tips for traveling with a baby

March 29, 2016

tips for traveling with a baby, how to fly abroad with a baby, tips for parents traveling with a baby, hot have smooth overnight flight with a baby

Travel is a big part of our lives and something we love to do, so it was important to us to introduce Baby Will to travel at an early age. We decided that for his first trip we would take him to London to meet his great-grandparents. At just 8-weeks old, we probably could have started off on a smaller scale. As it turns out, the hardest part of traveling with Will was getting him to look directly at the camera at 3 weeks old for his passport photo! Will did great and slept most of each flight, adjusted to our new time-zone without blinking an eye and he loved being out and about in the city each day. Things went better than we ever expected, but we did learn a few things along the way:

  • If you are planning to travel abroad with baby, order and apply for their birth certificate and passport asap. Once we got back from the hospital, we ordered and expedited Will’s birth certificate. We had one long week in March that we were able to get away to London, so we knew we had to rush the process. Once you have the birth certificate, you can get their passport within three weeks, if expedited.
  • Packing: Of course we had to check bags on this trip, but we also carried on changes of clothes for us and three changes for Will (in case of accidents!). Packing plenty of baby blankets and swaddles is also key. The temperature in the plane can go from cozy to cold and back again, so we always had a blanket to put over Will. Blankets also come in handy when nursing to throw over your shoulder for more privacy. And in London we had to pile on the blankets for Will on those extra chilly days. We packed our own diapers and wipes, not knowing if the ones we like would be available. The empty space where the diapers were made a great spot for our London shopping! Pack extra pacifiers. You never know when Baby’s favorite may fall on the ground in a place where you can’t clean it. We bought a double of Will’s favorite and were glad we did!
  • Be prepared: We used to like to get to their airport at the last possible minute, right before boarding time. This time, because we knew we had to check a bag and have time to feed and change Will before we boarded, we got there two hours early. That was hardly enough time, even with no line in TSA pre-check! We had just enough time for a (very) quick drink, and to feed and change Will before rushing to our gate.
  • Request a bassinet: As soon as we went through security, we went to the gate to request a bassinet. Unfortunately, on the way to London they were already all taken, but thankfully we had a plan B, which was a wrap baby carrier. This was great for a secure place for Will to sleep while we tried to get a little shuteye as well. On the way home we were able to get a bassinet, which also made a very convenient place for diaper changes!
  • Get access to the Admirals Club (or the lounge for your airline of choice): This was key to have a nice place to relax before boarding. The club has a nice, clean family bathroom that was great for changing diapers in a space that wasn’t openly available to the public.
  • To help with change in cabin pressure, Stia fed Will while we were taking off and landing. If it isn’t a good time for a feeding, a pacifier will do the trick.
  • Pay more for first class/business class/main cabin extra/bulkhead: While we wish we could have flown first class to London, it just wasn’t feasible. But we were able to sit in main cabin extra to London.  This section of the plane has only 3 rows and gives you more space and more privacy. On the way home from London we were able to reserve bulkhead seats which gave us lots of room for the bassinet, Will and all his gear.
  • Bring your baby’s stroller. We use the UPPAbaby stroller system (VISTA stroller and MESA car seat), and couldn’t be happier. We highly suggest the travel bag to protect the stroller when being gate checked. Will loves riding in his car seat which attaches to the stroller base. It made strolling him all over London a breeze! The stroller also comes with a bassinet attachment which folds up and fits in the stroller travel bag. This was the perfect bed for Will while we were in London. It was cozy and safe, and familiar to him.
  • Be willing to go with the flow: Impromptu diaper changes made this changing station a God-send. It’s used all the time at home, but when Will needed an immediate diaper change (i.e.: on the plane, on the train, using the stroller base in the middle of London, numerous pubs) we don’t know what we would have done without it! Also, a quiet corner in a pub makes a great nursing spot- plus it gave Caleb the opportunity to try a new beer and add a pub to his list.
  • Bring as much help as you can: on this trip we were so thankful for Jean’s third set of hands and arms to help with Will!
  • Most importantly, relax! Baby can sense if you are nervous or anxious about traveling with them and they will react the same. Know that your baby will probably cry on the plane at some point and that is ok. When we first boarded our flight to London, Will started screaming, but after a few long minutes he stopped (to the relief of our co-passengers) and then slept most of the flight there.

We are so grateful for a such a wonderful experience on Will’s first trip! Now we are busy planning our next getaway- this time it will most likely be on this continent 🙂

william harris coffman

February 8, 2016

newborn, baby boy, newborn pictures

We are so excited to officially introduce you to William Harris Coffman! He was very punctual, born on his due date, Thursday, January 14th at 10:57 pm, weighing 8 lbs 11 oz and 21 inches long. To say we are smitten and have never loved anything more is an understatement! What a gift from God.

On Wednesday, January 13th, Caleb and I went to our weekly doctor appointment, scheduled an induction for the following Wednesday, and went about our day. We met my family for lunch at Neimans, my mom and I shot an outfit post, then all six of us met for Thai food at The Mint. While at dinner, I started to have some mild cramps, but nothing that I thought could be contractions. I guess spicy food can induce labor 🙂 I had experienced an increasing amount of Braxton Hicks, and this didn’t seem that much different. After leaving dinner, Caleb and I stopped by Party City to pick up bubble-gum cigars (one pink box and one blue box), TCBY for frozen yogurt and then headed home! I still didn’t believe that I was in early labor, but decided to play it safe and went to bed early in case the next day was a long one.

At 4 am on Thursday morning, I woke up to more cramps. They were infrequent and not painful, so I tried to go back to bed. At 6 am, I decided to wake Caleb because they were starting to be more frequent and more painful. We got up and ate breakfast, I picked up around the house and then took a bath to relax, still not convinced I was in labor. Around 9 am I decided to lie down and try to get some rest. When I got up at 9:30 (I am not a napper), I felt a gush of water and was shocked that my water had just broken. We ended up at the doctor to verify what we already knew. She confirmed that my water had broken and that I was 5 cm dilated. She then sent us on our way to the hospital! Thankfully, our hospital bags were already packed, and we checked in around noon.

After checking in to the hospital, I labored for about six hours. Labor is no joke! Caleb and my mom were there to help me through contractions, while the rest of our families were patiently waiting in the waiting room. My contractions were one right after the other with no breaks in between. The pain was so excruciating and unfortunately I got sick, at that point I had had enough. I was planning an unmedicated birth, but when my doctor came in and said we needed to start pitocin, I caved and got the epidural. At about 7:00 pm, I was feeling much better and able to converse like a normal person! We let the pitocin and epidural work their magic and at about 10:00 pm, I was ready to push. I pushed for about 30 minutes, the nurse called my doctor to come at about 10:45, and after four more pushes our precious baby was born!

There has been no other feeling in the world than Caleb announcing “It’s a boy!” and having our precious baby boy laid on my chest. Happy tears came from both of us and we were so excited to welcome our son into the world. There truly is nothing like the miracle of pregnancy and giving birth. We are so thankful for this blessing from God!

Now that we have settled into our new normal, we honestly can’t imagine our lives with out William. Yes, sometimes those 5:00 am feedings are tough, and I have called my mom a handful of times in tears, but they are all worth it. Will has us laughing all day long (the boy has loud bodily functions!) and his snuggles are seriously the best. It’s true what they say, you can never fully understand the love your parents have for you until you become a parent yourself. Welcome to the world William Harris– we love you more than you know!
