one year with william

January 16, 2017

newborn, baby boy, newborn pictures

Happy Birthday to our precious William Harris Coffman! On Saturday, January 14th, this little baby turned one. What a year it has been! The best moments of life and some of the hardest, too. As I have been getting teary eyed thinking back and looking back at our photos, videos and memories from his first year of life, I thought it would be fun to look back at a few pictures to see how much he has changed! He’s always been long and lean, but I can’t get over how dark is hair was! His eyes are the prettiest blue too.Who would have thought?! Especially considering Caleb and I both have dark brown eyes.

It has been an incredible year watching him grow, learn and see that little personality come though. He is strong-willed, gives out the best smiles and biggest belly laughs, doesn’t like taking no for an answer, goes non-stop every waking second, sleeps hard, plays hard and eats a ton. I am still nursing him a few times a day, but solids have definitely become a major source of nutrition. He loves grilled cheese, pears and peanut butter banana toast, but he will try pretty much anything. We are now utilizing a sippy cup for water and will start him on milk soon. His favorite game is hide and seek, peek a boo and he loves cruising in his wagon. William says mama, dada, bye bye and “vroom”. He loves clapping at everything, pointing and waving and he’s already got flirting down pat.

William, you are the biggest joy to everyone that knows you and I am so thankful to be your mama! Happy Birthday!

We celebrated his birthday all weekend and we can’t wait to share details of William’s “Party Animal” First Birthday! Stay tuned for pictures from his party…

william’s nine month update

October 18, 2016

nine month old baby sitting on a pumpkinRecently, we made a trip to the Pumpkin Patch at the Dallas Arboretum. It seemed like the perfect place to take William’s pictures for his nine month baby update. We had the absolute best time. There were pumpkins everywhere, even little houses made with pumpkins. He loved seeing all of the pumpkins and he had his first taste of dirt- yuck! He is all boy 🙂 It was so much fun and such a fun place to spend the day that we bought an annual family membership, so we can go back whenever we like.

It is so hard to believe that my baby is 9-months old. As usual, the time seems to fly by and go slow all at the same time. I think each month gets more and more fun, but also more exhausting! When William is awake, he is busy. Like, he wakes up and doesn’t stop until nap time. I love his energy and seeing his excitement for all things. He talks to everything he sees- but especially our Nest thermostat, the washer and dryer and he is obsessed with crawling over to and playing with the door stopper. When we are on walks, he reaches to touch every plant and loves to play in the dirt. Plus, he greets most everyone with a squeal and the cutest smile. He continues to be the biggest flirt, and has recently started to snuggle with me more and more. My favorite thing he is doing now? Giving big, slobbery kisses! With all the good and bad that comes with parenting (we had a little scare at the doctor- everything is fine now), it made me realize how much I am not in control and how much I need to rely on God through this journey called parenthood!

  • Height/Weight: William is long and lean and continues to trend that way.
  • Sleeping: After what seemed like a horrible sleep regression, we made some progress! William was waking 2-3x a night and I hit the point of pure exhaustion. We ended up deciding to do sleep training, something I said I would never do, but it worked and it worked fast. The first night was rough. I probably cried more than William, but he has continued to sleep well until recently when he had three teeth come through! If you have any questions about what sleep training we did, feel free to email me at hello@bishopandholland.com. Also, we shared William’s bedtime routine last week!
  • Nursing: I am still nursing William frequently throughout the day. Because we never had a set “eating” schedule and I just fed him on demand, a lot of that is comfort nursing! Nursing continues to work for us and I haven’t really thought about weaning yet. Especially because it is such a comfort to William while he is enduring teething.
  • Solids: William loves trying and eating solids. Right now, he is eating solids in the morning and for dinner, about an hour after I nurse him. He is still eating a mix between purees and bite-sized foods. His favorites are carrots, bananas, peaches, eggs, avocados and spinach but he will literally eat anything! Our pediatrician would like to see William gain a little more weight, so now we will be adding in lunch and snacks when needed, in addition to breakfast and dinner. Also, he just learned how to take off his bib, so the messy eater just got messier!
  • Personality: William is the smiliest, happiest baby. Don’t get me wrong, he cries but its usually only when he is overtired or suddenly realizes he is hungry. He wakes up with a smile on his face and is ready to get going as soon as he eats. We walk Caleb to work and then go for a walk around the neighborhood because he absolutely loves being outside. Now that the weather is nice, we go to the park a lot and he loves swinging and watching the big kids play. He has mastered army crawling, starting to pull up and sitting like a champ. He babbles all day long, but we are still waiting to hear mama and dada! I’ve talked about it before, but he is the biggest flirt. I have women come up to me at Whole Foods saying that he makes their day because of his big smiles. William is such a joy to be around and I love watching his personality grow more and more everyday.
  • Schedule: Our schedule differs every day, but it always revolves around a morning nap three hours after William wakes up and an afternoon nap three hours after William wakes up from his morning nap. I am so lucky in that I can typically count on two, two hour naps every day! We also follow the same bedtime routine every evening.
  • Teeth: Four teeth are in and it looks like one more just cut through last night
  • Travel: William is still a great traveler. Since our last update he has been to San Diego (again), New York for Fashion Week and we tagged along on Caleb’s business trip to Helsinki, Finland. We also took our first road trip down to San Antonio for a stay at La Cantera Resort. William does great on planes and in the car, thankfully! See our Tips for Traveling with a Baby and Tips for Traveling with an Older Baby for more about traveling with your baby. We have two more trips planned in November, and then we are planning to be home the rest of the year!

three months with william

April 18, 2016

three months with WilliamIt’s hard to believe that our William is three months old already. In some ways, that three months seems like it has flown by (didn’t we just take his newborn photos?), but in other ways it seems like forever. Our pastor couldn’t have said it any better- the days are long and the years are short. The past three months have been the best months of my life. As a person who wasn’t a “baby” person, my world has been rocked (in a very good way). If you haven’t been around kids or are scared to hold babies, it’s okay. I definitely felt this way before William and things ended up just fine 🙂 I can’t get enough of him and it’s true… that maternal instinct comes on its own.

There have been a lot life changes and learning over the past few months and I thought I would update you on William and how things are going for us.

  • Weight: 13 pounds 2 oz Length: 24 inches- William is long and lean. He is currently wearing at least 6 months in most clothes and is growing out of them quickly! His everyday favorites are Kissy Kissy, but Gigi insists on him having a little Burberry in his wardrobe too! These little swim trunks are next on the list.
  • Sleep: William has been a good sleeper from the beginning. He was never confused between night/day and has always gone to bed easily (thank God!). Will slept in a moses basket in our room until our trip to London. Once we got back, we moved him into his crib in the nursery. The first couple of nights were rough, but we haven’t looked back! He typically sleeps from 9 pm-6 am, but we have started to see a little sleep regression the past few nights, which we hear tends to happen around three months.
  • Nursing: When I first started nursing, it was very painful. I was expecting it to be uncomfortable at first, but at his 3-day old appointment, our doctor noticed he was tongue-tied. We saw an ENT a few days later for a procedure to correct it. I nursed him right after the procedure and what a difference it made! I have been exclusively breastfeeding (with an occasional bottle) since William was born. I know it doesn’t work for everyone, but it has been great for us.
  • The Happiest Baby on the Block: It was at William’s 4-week appointment that the doctor diagnosed him as colic. (Sorry, if you brought us dinner and our baby was crying for no reason #firsttimeparents). She told us to look into this book (that some of you guys also recommended to us) that describes the 5 S’s as ways to soothe: swaddle, lay on their side, shush, swing and suck. At first we didn’t think William liked being swaddled, but really we just needed one that he couldn’t get out of! This one is our favorite. It really settles him down and allows him to relax and sleep. We just ordered this one to use for his next stage when we transition out of the swaddle.
  • Personality: It’s been so much fun getting to see his personality develop. He is full of smiles and also talking like crazy. He loves the ladies- anytime there is a pretty face around, he smiles and bats his baby blues. Will also seems to be quite the deep thinker, he studies everything around him very intently! He is very easy going and we take him with us just about everywhere. He also has no problem letting us know when he is not happy i.e.: a wet diaper, fighting sleep and also during tummy time (his absolute least favorite activity).
  • Schedule: We are on the no schedule, schedule. Because Will nurses on-demand, every day is a little different.  Our typical schedule is nurse, play, sleep and repeat. So far this has worked for us, but I know as babies get older a schedule is really important.
  • Travel: Don’t be afraid to travel with a baby! Travel is a huge part of our lives, so we took William to meet his great-grandparents in London at 8-weeks old. We shared our tips for traveling with a baby and we are excited that we have a few more upcoming trips planned.
  • Our must-have baby gear includes: Will’s pacifier, Giraffe or “Raffe”, is his best friend and goes with us everywhere, this swaddle was a lifesaver, we love our car seat/stroller set and travel bag, this diaper changing station fits perfectly inside my favorite tote bag, the cutest moccasins in every color (and they stay on even the tiniest little feet), lightweight muslin swaddles for blankets, car seat covers and nursing privacy and this bathtub makes bath time a breeze.

My best piece of advice is to take time and slow down. The newborn period is hard and wonderful at the same time. So many snuggles and so many cries. And diapers. We cleared our schedules to really take the time to figure out our new life and we are so glad we did. After being at home with Will for these first three months, Caleb and I have decided that I will not be going back to work and instead I will stay at home with Will. We have put a lot of thought and prayer into this decision and feel it’s the best one for our little family. I truly loved my job and after being there for over 5 years, it’s hard to leave, but I am so grateful that my job now is raising Will (and writing the blog with Katherine and Jean of course!). Will, you are the best thing that has ever happened to us and we are so thankful God blessed us with you! It’s a joy being your momma.
