resort wear

July 15, 2014

DSC_0016It’s probably no surprise that we spent Fourth of July weekend at the Four Seasons Scottsdale, especially if you are following us on Instagram!  Before our trip, we partnered with St. Bernard Sports for three resort appropriate outfits.  For those of you who are unaware of St. Bernard Sports, they are a fantastic boutique headquartered in Austin, with stores in Dallas at Inwood Village and a new outlet located at the Shops at Park Lane, but they also have a great online shopping website!  We’ve driven by St. Bernard Sports many times, never realizing that it’s much more than a sporting goods store.  Let us be the first to tell you, that was a huge mistake!  St. Bernard Sports does carry upscale sporting goods and sportswear (think ski, tennis, golf), but they also carry some of our favorite lines of contemporary designers:  Joie, Trina Turk, Vince, Amanda Uprichard, Shoshanna, Nicole Miller & Ali Ro.  With so many great designers to choose from it was a tough decision!  We each chose a dress for a private dinner at the resort in the wine room at Talavera.  For comfort & style in the desert heat, we opted for lightweight dresses and a lot of color.  With all that color, light on the jewelry & a neutral shoe was the way to go!

cilantro jalapeño hummus

July 14, 2014

DSC_0404

During our stay at the Four Seasons Scottsdale last week, we were introduced to a new snack – Cilantro Jalapeño Hummus.  We have been fans of hummus for years and we always like to try new varieties, but this was a first for us.  In just a matter of a few bites, we were completely addicted.  This hummus seems much lighter than most & the mix of flavors is amazing!  We had to ask for a second round of veggies so we could get every last drop.  It’s kind of embarrassing to say that we ordered it every day at the pool!  In fact, on our last day, the pool staff brought us an order gratis, along with the recipe.  What a relief that we can make it at home!   We hope that you will enjoy it as much as we do!

Cilantro Jalapeño Hummus

  • 2 (16 oz) cans garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup lime juice (approximately 3 limes)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups roughly chopped cilantro (about 1 bunch)
  • 2 – 3 large jalapeños,  cut in half (we like to leave the seeds in)
  • salt & pepper to taste

Directions:

  • Place everything in a food processor or Vitamix and blend together.  We like to leave the hummus slightly chunky, rather than a smooth puree.  Chill overnight and season with salt & pepper before serving.
  • Serve with triangles of pita bread and veggies.  We like carrots, jicama, cucumber, broccoli, sweet bell pepper, cherry tomatoes & cauliflower!  Enjoy!

Cheers,

san salvaje by stephen pyles

July 11, 2014

DSC_0970 Last week we had the pleasure of dining at San Salvaje by Stephen Pyles, his latest concept.  We’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about San Salvaje since it opened last month, so we were looking forward to trying it!  We started our evening with cocktails on the patio and a bocce ball challenge.  The patio with its fire pit feature and bocce ball court is a great place to hang out for drinks and appetizers.  The interior space is equally appealing with a distinct Latin American vibe, but in a subtle and stylish way.  Chef Pyles met us at our table and explained his passion for the menu at San Salvaje, based on his travels throughout Latin America.  There are many dishes that will be a new experience for most diners! DSC_0993 DSC_0999 DSC_0983 The menu is comprised of small plates – organized by type of dish – and a selection of platos grandes, entree size dishes.  Our server did an amazing job of guiding us through the menu and suggesting dishes and numbers of items to order.  He also suggested that we order family style, so we could have a taste of each.  That was perfect for us – we love to share!  While everything was incredible, a couple of our favorite small dishes were the sweet corn humita, a deconstructed tamale with lobster and a fried avocado slice – fantastic! – and the smoked duck tacos with rhubarb salsa – the guys favorite.   Entrees were outstanding, including a whole fried snapper with fried pickled green beans in a mango-habanero mojo – what a presentation! – and carne asada served with grilled queso blanco and enchilada pie. DSC_1014DSC_1017 DSC_1020DSC_1034 DSC_1040 Victor, the General Manager for San Salvaje, should also hold the title Sommelier!  His knowledge of San Salvaje’s well-curated wine list is extensive.  The wines offered at San Salvaje are all from Latin influenced countries, many that we hadn’t seen before.  Victor suggested three wines, new to us,  and all were a great match to the cuisine and to our palates. We finished our meal with the banana corunda & mexican chocolate ice cream accompanied by a 12-year aged rum.  Perfection.

It’s Friday, a great night for eating out, we highly suggest you try San Salvaje – let us know what you think!
