henry’s ice cream birthday party

October 1, 2018

mom and baby and waterfall balloons

// happy birthday henry! //

We can not believe our little Henry is one year old! We had so much fun planning his first birthday and preparing for the big celebration. So much of our extended family was able to be with us, including two great-grandmothers! Our closest friends and their kids came and celebrated Henry with us, too. It was an absolute blast and Henry loved it all!

At the beginning of summer I found some darling ice cream decor and ice cream shaped sidewalk chalk at Target’s Dollar Spot and that was the beginning of our theme; an ice cream party! I’d say it was a huge success and the most important part was that the birthday boy had fun! He loved trying all the ice cream and running around with his little friends!

Invitations

When I started to plan Henry’s Ice Cream party, I didn’t realize that everything I would find would be aimed towards girls. I contacted Lucy from Love Lucy Designs and she created the most perfect ice cream invitation for a little boy! This was the original ice cream invitation and below is the one Lucy created for Henry – so sweet!

Venue

When we originally started to plan Henry’s party, we thought for sure we would be in our new house in the backyard. Well, you guys know that we are still not in our house, so we had to come up with a Plan B. We decided that we would have Henry’s ice cream party at my parents’ house in their backyard – perfect for an ice cream party right?! It rained so hard all day the day of Henry’s party, so we moved to a Plan C! Ice cream and cupcake sundaes outside underneath the patio with Henry eating his birthday cake inside. It turned out to be perfect, even with all the changes of plans! If you’re brave enough, an ice cream party would be equally as cute at your neighborhood park, etc – just make sure to come up with a Plan B in case of rain!

Food/Drinks

We contacted Sprinkles Cupcakes to see if they did ice cream catering, and it turns out that they do, bringing the most adorable ice cream cart filled with so many flavors of ice cream. They also brought mini cupcakes in five different flavors, mini cones and also giant waffle cones – so that everyone would could make mini ice cream and cupcake sundaes! It was just so perfect for our ice cream party. Sprinkles has also just started making layer cakes and they provided one for Henry’s smash cake. Y’all it was so cute and so yummy- the best smash cake ever!

(Note: We had napkins and ice cream cups custom made, but Sprinkles provides branded cups, napkins, spoons, etc – all within the catering price).

It couldn’t just be sweets for everyone, so we also served mini corn dogs, and Kettle Brand Chips provided mini bags of chips for our guests. So in between servings of ice cream and cupcakes, everyone enjoyed the corn dogs and the fun flavors of chips.

We had water for the kids and served beer and wine for the adults!

Decor

To start things off on the right note, Float Balloon Bar created a giant ballon ice cream cone and balloon waterfall. It was amazing and so much fun! They also brought two giant balloons with tassels that said “Happy 1st Birthday Henry!” and “ONE”. The balloons made it all so fun and festive and Float Balloon Bar delivered and set up everything for us. It couldn’t have been better!

Outfits

As usual, when I pick a theme, I just go with it! A to Z Monogramming does all the boys custom monogramming and she can do just about anything! I sent her the Love Lucy invitation and she created the sweetest little ice cream monogram for the boys!

The three of us girls opted for dresses – even though it was raining! We didn’t come up with a plan B for ourselves ;).

william’s first birthday

baby eating cake at first birthday party

|not too sure about the cake|

Can you guys believe William is one?! We hardly can. This past year flew by! We had so many great adventures with William and so many great memories of his first year. We can’t wait to see what this year brings!

Planning for William’s First Birthday party was a blast. At first we weren’t sure if we would have a theme or just go with everything being baby blue. When William was born, Katherine gave him a gold giraffe wearing a party hat. When we spotted it sitting on the bookshelves in the nursery, it became our party inspiration and our theme; “Calling all party animals!”

Invitations:

  • Minted is one of our favorite online stores to find paper goods. We used Minted when we sent out William’s birth announcement last year and we loved how they turned out! As soon as I saw these “party animal” invitations I knew that was the direction we were going to go! He absolutely loves his giant stuffed giraffe “Ned” and he is Mr. Social, so party animals sounded like the perfect party for William. We customized a few options on the invitation: 1) Changed the banner to say – Calling all Party Animals. 2) Changed the color of the font to blue. 3) Chose personalized stamps (in blue) and 4) had the cutest return address tags added to the suite.
  • One of my absolute favorite parts? The invitations came printed with addresses, so all I had to do was stuff the envelopes and get them in the mail. Perfect timing since I was rushing to get them out before Christmas!

Food:

The party was from 2-4 pm because William is usually awake then! Because of the time, we decided to serve small bites of food and dessert instead of a full lunch.

  • Grilled cheese: We picked these up from Sonic and kept them in the oven warming throughout the party. They were a huge hit and William’s favorite food right now
  • Fruit Skewers: We stacked strawberries, cantaloupe and grapes on mini toothpicks w/party hats.
  • Cupcakes: My sister-in-law made funfetti cupcakes that were delicious. I found the idea for the mini gold party animals on Pinterest and decided to try it for William’s birthday. It was so easy to do and was the perfect touch for the food table!
  • Party Animal Cookies: One of Stia’s friends from college owns Sift Bake Shoppe. We reached out to her about doing the party animal cookies and we just love how they turned out! They were almost too cute to eat 😉
  • Smash Cake: We ordered a 6-inch vanilla cake at Whole Foods. You guys– it was incredible! One of the better cakes we have had from a bakery.

Drinks:

In our opinion, you can’t have a party without beer or champagne, so that’s what we did. We served everything in customized “William is ONE!” cups with coordinating straws to go along.

  • Champagne: Everyone likes to celebrate with champagne! We also had the option of peach nectar for bellinis and orange juice for mimosas
  • Beer: Caleb chose an assortment of beer, that we’re sure all the men appreciated 😉
  • Pellegrino: For any nondrinkers or moms-to-be, we served Pellegrino with a slice of lime.

Decor:

The decor was meant to be very festive – considering we were having a “party animal” birthday party!

  • Tassel garlands, tassel balloons, cake topper and William and Ned’s (William’s giraffe) party hats: Carousel Lane is an Etsy shop that we found while planning his party. All the party decor is SO cute and most everything is customizable based on whatever colors you choose. Everything was delivered very quickly and was so easy to put together. Disclaimer: Be careful once you have the 36-inch balloons filled with helium – one of ours popped when we were taking it out of the car, so we had to improvise!
  • Cups/Napkins: We used a local party store to make custom cups and napkins.
  • Party Hats: We found these party hats at Target for guests to put on when they walked in the door.

Party Favors:

  • Popcorn boxes: We filled popcorn boxes with popcorn from a local popcorn shop. The front of the box had the same “William is ONE!” logo on it and because they were party favors we wrapped them in clear bags with baby blue twine.

What we wore:

  • You all know that I love dressing William in traditional clothes, so he wore this adorable bubble with knee socks and saddle shoes. When it was time for him to dive into the cake, he wore this monogrammed bib!
  • The three of us girls decided we needed to be in something cute, but comfortable and  something that would make it easy to chase after William (he is obsessed with climbing the stairs!).We all wore jeans and flats and I wore this white lace top I got for Christmas, Katherine chose this sleeveless turtleneck sweater and Jean wore this navy ruffled shirt (that’s currently on sale for under $30!).

|the birthday boy cruising in his custom radio flyer|

One of the big hits at the party was William’s custom Radio Flyer wagon. The parents all took turns pulling the little ones through the house. William was a great host and didn’t mind sharing a bit 🙂 The party was so much fun! All of our family and closest friends came out to celebrate William and we all felt very loved and very blessed.

Cheers,

Stia, Jean & Katherine

one year with william

January 16, 2017

newborn, baby boy, newborn pictures

Happy Birthday to our precious William Harris Coffman! On Saturday, January 14th, this little baby turned one. What a year it has been! The best moments of life and some of the hardest, too. As I have been getting teary eyed thinking back and looking back at our photos, videos and memories from his first year of life, I thought it would be fun to look back at a few pictures to see how much he has changed! He’s always been long and lean, but I can’t get over how dark is hair was! His eyes are the prettiest blue too.Who would have thought?! Especially considering Caleb and I both have dark brown eyes.

It has been an incredible year watching him grow, learn and see that little personality come though. He is strong-willed, gives out the best smiles and biggest belly laughs, doesn’t like taking no for an answer, goes non-stop every waking second, sleeps hard, plays hard and eats a ton. I am still nursing him a few times a day, but solids have definitely become a major source of nutrition. He loves grilled cheese, pears and peanut butter banana toast, but he will try pretty much anything. We are now utilizing a sippy cup for water and will start him on milk soon. His favorite game is hide and seek, peek a boo and he loves cruising in his wagon. William says mama, dada, bye bye and “vroom”. He loves clapping at everything, pointing and waving and he’s already got flirting down pat.

William, you are the biggest joy to everyone that knows you and I am so thankful to be your mama! Happy Birthday!

We celebrated his birthday all weekend and we can’t wait to share details of William’s “Party Animal” First Birthday! Stay tuned for pictures from his party…
