Old Wives Tales to Predict Baby Gender

April 19, 2019

We didn’t find out the gender of either William or Henry until they were born, so we decided that for Baby #3 we would do the same. In some ways it’s really hard to wait, but believe me when I say that it is so worth it for that ultimate surprise. In our new house we have a bedroom and bathroom that we haven’t yet redone and I’m just waiting to find out what we have before doing anything. I’m about 95% sure we’re having another boy, but on the off chance that it’s a girl, you better believe I’m going to make the nursery and bathroom as girly as can be!

It’s been really fun to research all the old wives tales that predict gender to see what they say we’re having. Here are some of the ones we’ve found, and what they say Baby #3 will be.

PS: You can see what the Old Wives Tales said Henry was going to be, too!

Old Wives Tales to Determine Baby’s Gender

Sweet vs. Salty

I think I am always more of a sweet person – not just during pregnancy. I do like ice cream every night 😉 They say if you’re craving sweets it’s a girl, if you crave salty foods it’s a boy. This is a toss up – but I’ll say GIRL for this one.

Morning Sickness

This is probably the Old Wives Tale that most agree with. If you suffer from morning sickness, it’s a girl. No morning sickness, it’s a boy. I was very nauseated up until week 14, but I never once got sick. BOY.

Carrying High vs. Low

I’m carrying this baby the exact same way as the boys. BOY.

Emotional vs. Mellow

Overall, I would say mellow. I do have my days when I’m an emotional mess and they seem to be more frequent the further into this pregnancy I get (thank you hormones), but for the most part I’ve been laid back and mellow. BOY.

Heart Rate

Heart rates above 140 are girl, anything below is a boy. At my OB appointment on Tuesday, this baby had a heart rate of 130 – the lowest I’ve had during a pregnancy! BOY.

Chinese Birth Chart

This is another Old Wives Tale that people seem to think it pretty valid. It said girl for both the boys and for this baby, too. GIRL.

Pregnancy Glow or Breaking Out

A few zits here and there, but overall a clear complexion. BOY.

Cold Feet

They say if you’re feet are cold, expect a boy. My feet are constantly cold this pregnancy. BOY.

Ring on a String

Put your ring on a string and hold above stomach. If it moves in a circle, expect a girl, moves like a pendulum, expect a boy. We did this last week and the string was moving like a pendulum. BOY.

Ramzi Theory

Another theory is that at your earliest sonogram you can ask where the placenta is. Placentas that are on the right means a boy is on the way, on the left expect a girl! When we had our first sono at 8 weeks, she said the placenta was slightly right. BOY.

Out of these ten Old Wives Tales, eight say BOY! Which is what my gut is telling me, too! Did any the Old Wives Tales work for you? Only 11 more weeks until we find out!

maternity style

young mother chasing crawling baby

Happy Tuesday! It’s hard to believe that after nine months of maternity style (literally, this entire year!), the bump is gone and it’s time to start dressing without it. I truly enjoy being pregnant, but it’s always nice to get back to wearing regular clothes and not worrying if shirts are going to be long enough, etc!

I thought it would be fun to show my maternity style for this pregnancy over the last nine months. Being pregnant in the summer is so much easier to dress for than being pregnant in the winter, like when I was with William. I wore mostly non-maternity, flowy dresses, sizing up when needed, and that pretty much got me through until the end!

Let me know if you have any questions – the links right below the picture are for the original post and outfit details are below that!

39-week bumpdate

September 5, 2017

39 week bump date stripe maxi dressAny day now! I can hardly believe it. All in all, I am feeling pretty good! I get tired easily, but if I don’t overdue it I feel fine! It’s been nice having a long weekend to relax, finish last minute to-dos and enjoy a few days as a family before baby arrives. William is so sweet and is getting so excited to meet baby brother or sister. Every morning he gives my belly hugs and kisses – I can’t wait to see how he interacts with baby when he/she arrives!

The past week has been so much fun – I enjoyed a spa day with my mom, snuck in a mani/pedi this weekend and had fun spoiling William on his last days as an only child. Our hospital bags are packed and now we just wait! I do have an induction scheduled because of gestational diabetes, so I am praying that my body will go into labor before that day! In any case, we are so close!

Thanks for following along throughout the past nine months and we can’t wait to share the news with you soon!

HOW FAR ALONG?

39 weeks and four days.

HOW ARE YOU FEELING?

I am feeling ready. And anxious. I talked about it here, but I have so many emotions! I am so excited to find out if we will be adding a baby boy or baby girl to our family and I can’t wait to see how William is as a big brother. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed at the idea of having a one and a half year old toddler and a newborn, too. More than anything, I can’t wait to meet our precious baby, but I am soaking up and enjoying the time as a family of three before we are a family of four!

GENDER GUESSES

Now I feel like this baby is a boy! All in all, I am carrying the same way and besides the morning sickness and emotions, I feel like this pregnancy has been so similar to my last. We will see soon!

NAMES

I can’t believe it, but we actually have our names narrowed down to one boy and one girl. We are still deciding on middle names, but will most likely wait until we meet our baby.

CRAVINGS

Still wishing I could eat sweets and real ice cream, but Halo Top Birthday Cake Ice Cream will have to do in mean time.

GESTATIONAL DIABETES

All is well for diabetes and it is still controlled through my diet. Because I do have gestational diabetes and my OB won’t let me go past a certain point, we have an induction scheduled. I am praying that baby decides to come before then (I love the spontaneity and unknowing of when baby will arrive), but at least we have an end in sight!

WEIGHT GAIN

So far I’ve gained 16 pounds. I’ve had a hard time gaining weight while on the gestational diabetes diet. We are focusing on more snacks, a lot of protein and tons of water.

MATERNITY CLOTHES

I highlighted a few of my favorite maternity brands earlier this month, but I am pretty much living in loose dresses like this striped one, this floral one and this off the shoulder dress.

EXERCISE

Well, I am officially just walking for exercise when I can. I stopped taking Flywheel classes at 38-weeks. It was getting more and more difficult with a huge bump and my energy levels are gone!

SLEEP

Oh my goodness, sleep has been non-existent! Pregnancy insomnia is no joke and I just want to say thank you to all of you who sent suggestions on how to get some sleep on Instagram! I don’t usually like taking any medication (unless it’s absolutely necessary) but I gave in and started to use a sleep aid. I am so thankful for some rest the past few nights.

SIGNS OF LABOR

Exhaustion, lack of energy, braxton hicks contractions – but other than that, nothing!
